In cooperation with Damascus University, MSA held first lecture of the third phase / the stage of biotechnology / as part of the series of specialized scientific lectures.
The lecture was entitled “Introduction to Biotechnology: Principles and Applications” delivered by Dr. Yanal Qudsi , held in the Department of Physics at the Faculty of Science / Damascus University on Sunday 9/9/2018, in the presence of MSA President Dr. Mahmoud al-Irk and several specialists. .
Dr. Qudsi explained that Biotechnology is a word consisting of two parts: the first is Bio, which is derived from the Latin Word Bios and the second is Technology, which means the way things work. He explained that the traditional concept is the use of biological systems to produce a certain product. For thousands of years, the ancients knew that certain foods or drinks would change their properties if left for some time. The modern concept of biotechnologies is the use of Molecular techniques at the cellular, cellular or at the organelles level to modify biological systems in order to produce or improve the way a product is produced or to perform a specific function.
He added that the basic unit of DNA is hypnucleotide DNA. It consists of a huge number of nucleotides linked in a chain and each molecule is made up of two strings that double around each other in a double Helix. The cell must be duplicated before the cell is split and the new cells must get a replica of the original DNA.
He continued that biotechnologies have entered into all areas of life and they have many applications in the field of medicine such as: 1 – Manufacture of human insulin in colon bacteria. 2 – Methods of gene expression for the production of reactive proteins 3 – Production of pharmaceutical proteins and vaccines 4 – Discovery of a drug for the disease of progesterone 5 – Molecular medical diagnostics 6 – Gene therapy 7 – DNA techniques.
He also noted biotechnologies applications in the agricultural area: 1 – the field of animal production. 2. Production of biotechnology crops. In the field of industrial applications, the most important applications: 1 – in the bacteria used for the manufacture of cheese 2 – enzymes Pectin analysis 3 – Ice cream biotechnology 4 – Indigo dye and the process of bio – stonewashing 5 – Biotechnology enzymes used in the manufacture of detergents 6- Removal of lignin in the paper industry 7. Protein for ice-skating 8. Bio-plastic industry.
As for the applications of biotechnology in the environment, he noted: 1 – Elimination of contaminants using living organisms 2 – Reduce the phenomenon of nutrient contaminants 3 – Production of biofuels, and 4 – Vital reagents.
